Over the past few weeks, I had the opportunity to sit down with the Bicycle Advocacy Group and other cyclists to discuss potential measures I can put forward at the European Parliament in order to ensure that our cycling lanes are up to standard and safe for cyclists.
I have launched the campaign #Respect cyclists in order to raise more awareness that roads need to be shared with all users. Participants are required to post a photo with their bike online using #RespectCyclists #BAG and send it to me on my Facebook page. Each participant can then redeem a safety reflective vest & an armband.
Moreover, I have taken up a number of measures as follows :
1. I have raised the matter with the European Commission emphasising on the need to ensure that EU funded roads have adequate cycling infrastructure to guarantee road safety for cyclists.
2. I am calling on the government to develop without further delay a National Cycling Strategy for Malta.
3. I have called on the government and the European Commission to consult more with cyclists especially when road projects are planned.
